Some Recent FAQs

Here are answers to some recent frequently asked questions:

Q: Can participants come for part of the time? Either morning, afternoon, or evening as not everyone has 12 hours to give but would like to support the cause.
A: Participants are free to come and go but must sign-in and sign-out each time. However, youth participants must note on their permission slips when they will be coming and going. We cannot release a youth without parental consent.

Q: What if they won't know until Saturday what their schedule is? Can they pay "at the door", so to speak? Make a donation of a certain amount, etc.
A: The rules for this year's event are a little different than they have been in the past. There will be no on-site registration the day of the event. Anyone considering coming should follow the steps to register. In our opinion, it is better to have the opportunity to come and choose not to show rather than not to be allowed to enter because you did not sign-up. Participants must register online by this Thursday (June 4th). Youth participants must also mail in permission slips by Thursday. Registration fees are also due. Anyone with an outstanding situation regarding the possibility of coming Saturday should contact Gail Tuohey at gail.tuohey@cancer.org.

Q. Once in, do they have to stay until 11 pm?
A: Adults participants are welcome to come and go as they please as long as they sign-in and sign-out. However, a chaperone can only leave if another team chaperone is present. As well, youth participants must note on their permission slips when they plan on leaving (or if they plan on arriving late or returning).

Q: What about the high school students who work during the day but want to come by in the evening? Maybe to see the bands?
A: Registered youth participants can arrive late but must have it noted on their permission slip (same for if they must leave early). However, this year's event does not allow non-registered guests to come to watch bands as "visitors." If you want to see a band, you must register online and follow all other registration protocol.

Q: What about those that are 18? Or under 18?
A: "Youth" participants are considered anyone still in high school or younger. However, a chaperone must be a parent (or legal guardian) that is over 21 years of age and not an older brother or sister. If you have questions regarding your specific scenario, please contact Gail Tuohey at gail.tuohey@cancer.org.

Q: What's the deal with Thursday, June 4th?
A: At the end of the day Thursday, registeration will officially be closed. Everyone must have registered with a team online and either paid the registration fee online or mailed it in. That is all an adult participant must do. Youth participants must print out and mail in a permission slip. The form must arrive by Thursday. Chaperones must also fill out the chaperone packet and mail it in. It too must arrive by Thursday. Forms, cash/check registration fees and other donations can be mailed to: Gail Tuohey75 Davids Drive, Hauppuage, NY 11788. Contact Gail at gail.tuohey@cancer.org with any questions or concerns.

Q: What should I bring with me on Saturday?
A: Excellent question! Here's a checklist: www.jbjimbo.net/relaypacket.doc

Q: I'm a team captain but missed the last meeting, what do I need to do?
A: Please see other stated instructions to double check all registrations and permission forms. We will have your t-shirts for picking up Saturday morning. Questions about t-shirts can be directed to Gail Tuohey at gail.tuohey@cancer.org You are also not assigned a campsite. Questions about campsites can be directed to James Brierton at jbrierton@verizon.net. If you have not submitted a team song, please send it to James Brierton (jbrierton@verizon.net). We also want to remind you to bring extra cash the day of the event for on-site fundraisers. You're certainly going to want to buy a raffle ticket - grand prize is a 3 day/2 night trip to Florida with free JetBlue airfare. Other prizes including Mets and Long Island Ducks tickets.

Q: How do I sign-up as a cancer survivor or caretaker for the suvivor brunch?
A: We want to insure we have enough food for our survivor brunch so we request that you RSVP. To RVSP, please e-mail Gail Tuohey at gail.tuohey@cancer.org.

If you have a question or concern you feel is worthy to share with all, please send us a comment below. Private concerns can be directed to Gail Tuohey at gail.tuohey@cancer.org.

  • IF EVERYONE CAN MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THEIR TEAM T-SHIRTS, CAMPSITE LOCATION, SUBMITTED A TEAM SONG, HANDED IN ALL PAPERWORK AND HAVE ALL TEAM MEMBERS REGISTERED BY THURSDAY THEN WE'LL BE GOOD TO RELAY!

Its just about the point where all your hard work pays off!

He's Back!!!

Back by popular demand! The planning committee for the Relay for Life of Smithtown is happy to announce guitarist Dave Anthony will once again be performing at this year's event.

Despite last year's rescheduling, Dave was able to attend our Mini-Relay last year. And even when it began to rain during the Mini-Relay (I mean... come'on... what were the chances of that), Dave stuck it out and continued to perform after the brief storm.

If you'd like to listen to Dave's performance from last year's Mini Relay, you can download his Mini-Relay performance by Clicking Here (courtesy of our friends at SmithtownRadio.com).

You can also visit Dave on the Web at www.DaveAnthonyMusic.com.

Welcome to the Relay for Life Blog

As a part of our ongoing effort to deliver the latest information to you, we have created the Relay for Life of Smithtown blog.

The blog will be used to deliver timely information between Captain's Meetings and recaps of past meetings.

As well, it provides a platform for us to continue our dialog. You can talk with us by leaving comments on blog entries. Please note - your comments will be viewable by anyone reading the blog.

In addition, please let us know how we can help you. If your team will be holding a pasta night, car wash or other type of fundraiser please let us know so we can advertise here on our blog. And speaking of advertisers, the blog will also be used to announce new Relay for Life of Smithtown sponsors. Local businesses are encouraged to sponsor our event. For $250 (either in goods or monetary donation) the local business will receive a track sign. For $500, the business's name will be printed on the back of participant's Relay t-shirts.

"That's Entertainment!"

The theme for the fourth annual Relay for Life of Smithtown is "That's Entertainment!"

As a team, you're encouraged to dress up and decorate your camp site resembling a favorite movie, broadway show or television show. And then on June 6th, an Oscar, Tony and an Emmy will be awarded to the team with the best costumes and decorations in each category.

And as a part of our themed laps, each team will be given the opportunity to walk around the track with all their participants to show off their work. Once you know what production you wish to model your team after be sure to call dibs. To do so, click below to leave a comment that includes your production and team name.

Please note your comments will be viewable to anyone on our blog...
